影片改编自托芙·扬松广受喜爱的同名小说《夏日之书》，讲述了九岁女孩索菲娅与年迈祖母之间的温情故事。索菲娅处在飞速成长的懵懂岁月，而祖母的生命已悄然接近尾声。她们和索菲娅的父亲一起来到芬兰湾一座与世隔绝的小岛，在这里度过宁静的夏日时光。她们在岛上自由漫步，畅谈生命、自然与其他的一切，却始终避而不谈索菲娅母亲离世带来的悲痛，以及彼此心底深藏的爱意。随着夏日的流逝，情感的创伤逐渐愈合，亲情的纽带愈发紧密，祖母终于能够了无牵挂，安心离去。
